Supporting Christian Families in Bethlehem, the Holy Land

Preserving Faith Through Craftsmanship

Christians in the Holy Land are primarily concentrated in the West Bank, especially in the historic towns of Bethlehem, Beit Sahour, and Beit Jala. These towns are known for their deep biblical roots and the devotion of their Christian inhabitants. They are also home to family-run olive wood workshops, small souvenir shops, guesthouses, and restaurants that serve the pilgrims and tourists who journey here to walk in the footsteps of Christ.

To reach these sacred towns, visitors must pass through heavily monitored military checkpoints, as Bethlehem and surrounding areas lie within restricted territories. Despite the barriers, Bethlehem— the birthplace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ—remains a beacon of faith, drawing Christians from all over the world.

Beyond the pilgrim paths and sacred sites lies a sobering reality:
Life for the local Christian population is increasingly difficult. According to the National Catholic Reporter, in 1950, Christians made up 86% of the population in Bethlehem and nearby villages. By 2016, that number had fallen to just 12%, as reported by former mayor Vera Baboun. Today, Christians represent less than 2% of the population in the West Bank.

The dramatic decline is driven by:

  • Ongoing political and economic instability

  • Limited access to resources and job opportunities

  • Daily social and movement restrictions

  • Discrimination based on faith and ethnic identity

Despite these challenges, the Christian community continues to preserve its faith and heritage through the sacred art of olive wood carving. This traditional craft—passed down from generation to generation—is more than a livelihood. It is an expression of faith, a form of resistance, and a way to hold onto cultural identity in a land marked by hardship.

Every hand-carved cross, rosary, nativity, and sacred figure represents not just artistry, but a deep spiritual legacy. Through their craftsmanship, these artisans proclaim their enduring presence in the land of Christ and their unwavering commitment to their Christian faith.
